Parenting Young Children Class

This class is designed for the parents of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarten age children.

Parents are invited to attend class with their children.  In most cases, families eat dinner, have a structured parent-child activity, and then parents meet in a small group setting with one of our parent educators while children play in on-site childcare.  Class materials, meals and childcare are provided free of charge.

Parents are encouraged to share their thoughts, questions and input regarding topics that are discussed from week to week in the parent group.  Most often topics of conversation fall into the following broad categories:

  • Understanding Ages and Stages of Child Development. What are kids capable and not capable of during the early years?
  • Child Temperament and Birth Order. How do they affect children’s behavior?  How do they affect the way you engage with your kids?
  • Parenting Styles. Including differences in the way men and women parent as well as ideas for how to work effectively with your partner.
  • Guidance and Discipline Techniques. Discuss specific strategies to use with children, from giving choices to setting limits. We may also do some group problem solving with parents who have a specific challenge that they would like to discuss. Feel like you are the only parent to ever have to deal with a specific behavior? You will likely be surprised!!
  • Creating Environments that Encourage Child Growth. Mealtime routines, bedtime routines, reading with young children, and age appropriate play. Any or all of these topics may be discussed as well as many others.
  • Taking Care of Your Adult Relationships and Taking Care of You. Both of these topics are necessary conversation pieces, too. In order to be at your very best, you must take care of yourself and engage in healthy relationships. Your kids need you to model this type of self care!

Pre-Registration is required. Please contact the Parent Education Consortium, (319) 399-6809.
