ComServ Grant Awarded to Grant Wood AEA

Grant Wood AEA recently received a ComServ Iowa grant through the Iowa Department of Education to support service-learning enrichment in our AEA region.  One of the objectives of this proposal is “to explore the use of service-learning as a teaching method in AEA 10 schools.”  By exploring district understanding and implementation of service-learning as a teaching method, Grant Wood AEA will know how to best support district service-learning efforts.  Curriculum Directors will receive an email with a link to an online survey in the coming weeks.  Your response will be appreciated!

Grant Opportunities

** State Farm Insurance Companies is making $5 million dollars available for service-learning grants.  The deadline for applying is November 15, 2006.

Grants ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 per year are being offered by the State Farm Youth Advisory Board.  Applicants may request any amount within this range based on a required budget which outlines project expenses and they may choose between one- and two-year grant options.

Grant requests must focus on one of the following issues:

  • disaster preparedness
  • driver safety
  • accessing higher education/closing the achievement gap
  • financial education.

The number of grants awarded will depend on the number and quality of requests received. Grant amounts will vary according to the nature of the proposal and availability of funds. At least one service-learning project will be funded in each of the thirteen State Farm zones.

To be eligible to receive a grant from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board, applicants should be either an educator who currently teaches in a public K-12, charter, or higher education institution, or a school-based service-learning coordinator whose primary role is to coordinate service-learning projects in a public, charter, or higher education institution. Non-profit organizations are also eligible if they are able to demonstrate how they plan to actively interact with students in public K-12 schools.

** The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service (ICVS) is pleased to announce the availability of federal AmeriCorps funds.  Applicants must be non-profit [501(c)3] organizations, schools, Indian tribes, faith-based organizations, or local or state government agencies (or a combination of these organizations) and engage a minimum of 10 full-time equivalent AmeriCorps members.

Grants are awarded on a competitive basis to programs that address educational, environmental, homeland security, human or public safety needs (particularly those mobilizing more volunteers, ensuring a brighter future for Iowa’s youth, engaging students in communities and harnessing baby boomers’ experience), and demonstrate community support to provide resources and meet matching requirements.

  • Applicants will submit applications electronically into the Corporation for National and Community Service’s eGrants website by December 7, 2006 and submit seven (7) hard copies of the entire application and requested attachments to the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service.  Successful applicants will be notified of grant review committee recommendations by January 31, 2007, and final notification from the Corporation is normally in June.  The programs selected will then begin September 1, 2007.

For more information on the application instructions and supporting materials, please visit the website of the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service at http://www.volunteeriowa.org/americorps/funding.html.
